Webinar: Protecting the aftermarket and right to repair in the U.S.

by | Apr 3, 2018 | 0 comments

On Monday, April 16th at 2pm, Aaron Lowe, Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Government Affairs with Auto Care Association will join AIA Canada  for its first Community of Practice: Fair Access to Vehicle Data to  deliver a webinar on Auto Care’s efforts to secure the U.S. aftermarket’s right to repair.

In an effort to engage industry stakeholders in AIA Canada’s two key government relation files, AIA introduced the Community of Practice: Fair Access to Vehicle Data and the Community of Practice: Education and Workforce Development.

The two communities bring stakeholders together in a virtual space to exchange information and knowledge on the group’s file of interest. The Communities of Practice are dynamic; there is no set schedule for when groups will meet and no group membership – stakeholders can attend whichever meetings they wish to attend. Meetings will focus on a particular topic related to the key file and will include a knowledge exchange session and a question and discussion period. When possible, we will bring in an industry stakeholder or third party to run the knowledge exchange session.

Auto Care and Right to Repair.

  • Auto Care believes that the sustainability of the aftermarket will be decided by consumer choice and control over their vehicle data. The association believes that “if the owners can decide where the data goes, they will likely direct the data to the independent service industry.”http://www.searchautoparts.com/aftermarket-business/automotive-aftermarket-technology/aftermarket-telematics-debate-between-data-se?page=0,1
  • Auto Care’s “Your Car. Your Data. Your Choice” campaign seeks to raise awareness among consumers about issues of access and ownership of vehicle data. https://yourcaryourdata.org/
  • Auto Care is taking action to ensure that the rules being developed today that will govern connected and self-driving vehicles do not inadvertently hurt the aftermarket.
  • Auto Care is fighting for the rights of the consumer and the automotive repair industry to have access to vehicle data by advocating for a Secure Vehicle Interface – a vehicle communications interface that will provide secure third-party access to vehicle data.
