With the push for lower emissions and cleaner transportation, drivers are gradually shifting to EVs — and that means there will be a growing demand for automotive service technicians with the right expertise. As more EVs hit the road, customers will need automotive service technicians with EV expertise.

The challenge? Servicing EVs isn’t the same as working on gas powered cars.

Automotive service technicians now need specialized skills in high-voltage batteries, electric motors, and complex  electronics—it’s a whole new ballgame. Training techs now will keep shops competitive for years to come.

The Electric Vehicle: Automotive Service Technician microcredential offered through New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) is an opportunity for technicians across New Brunswick to expand their skills and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving industry. As part of NBCC’s ongoing efforts to support the transition to Electric Vehicles in New Brunswick, the college is launching this new government-funded program for qualified candidates.

With just 90 hours of part-time training over 12 weeks, students will posess the knowledge and hands-on experience to diagnose, service, and maintain hybrid and electric vehicles—all aligned with the 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standards. 

The program is fully funded (cost covered) for accepted students.

The program’s schedule is designed not to interfere with working hours; running for 12 weeks (90 hours total), featuring online evening classes and in-person shop time every other Saturday. Upon program completion, graduates will be qualified to safely diagnose, service, and repair hybrid and electric vehicles.

Program components include:

• Basic Electrical Principles 
• High-Voltage Battery Servicing
• EV Safety Protocols 
• EV Systems & Components
• EV Support Systems

Upon completion of the microcredential, students will receive a digital badge as visual proof of achievement. The badge can be shared this on a resume, LinkedIn profile, email signature, or other digital platforms, highlighting the certified abilities earned from the program.

Noted requirements:

• Resident of New Brunswick
• At a minimum, completion of Level 3 of the Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship Program (proof of completion is required for admission)
• Must have completed Block 3 or higher and be able to attend the in-person training components in Fredericton, Moncton, or Saint John.
• Students must also provide their own safety glasses and CSA approved boots as required PPE for the training.
