Castrol products already meeting GF-6

Castrol distributor Wakefield Canada reports that all applicable Castrol products already meet the coming GF-6 specification.

Starting May 1st 2020, oil manufacturers will be required to move fluids to the new GF-6 specification.

Castrol API GF-6

With the new GF-6 specification comes a brand-new set of engine tests not seen in the industry before, and splits the API specification into two categories:

  • GF-6A applies to grades with viscosity of 0W-20 and greater
  • GF-6B applies to grades with viscosity lower than 0W-20 (Grade 0W-16)

The transition to GF-6 also brings a new API “SP” spec, which replaces the transitional API SN+.

This means that the GF-5 SN+ protection against catastrophic engine failure associated with Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) is now automatically covered by the new GF-6 specification.

While the industry moves to meet this new spec, Castrol has already transitioned all applicable automotive fluids to the new specification.

This will be reflected on labels starting May 1, 2020.
