Starting this January, Automotive Industries Association of Canada has joined forces with St. Lawrence College to offer free EV training at its Cornwall, Ontario, campus.

It is also offering an exploration program designed to help attract young people to the industry.

AIA Canada conceived the programs in recognition of the fact that the type of work that automotive tradespeople do is being transformed.

Training programs will take place at St. Lawrence College’s Automotive Lab, which has been updated with new tools and equipment as well as outfitted with an Electric Vehicle (EV) to work on.

The Electric Vehicle Training Program is geared to help automotive technicians acquire new expertise and skills in electric vehicle maintenance and repair.

The program is an upskilling course, allowing current automotive industry tradespeople to develop maintenance and repair skills relating to EVs.

The program will cover such issues as safety; state-of-the-art tools and use; diagnostic trouble codes; electric motor controls; and more.

Instructors will lead theoretical and hands-on training for 8 full-day modules ongoing to March 2023, allowing interested students to choose the model that best suits their time and schedule.

Technicians are eligible for the EV Upskilling training program if they are

  • 18 years of age or older;

  • not in school;
  • currently employed in the automotive industry;

A Career Exploration Program also being offered, designed to help new automotive industry job seekers acquire the skills, equipment, tools and other supports needed to embark on a successful career search in the automotive aftermarket industry.

The Career Exploration Program consists of a pre-apprenticeship exploratory experience. Participants may be eligible for supports like work boots, basic tools, safety equipment, reference books, etc., as well as transportation assistance.
