General Motors (GM) has emerged as the top-selling electric vehicle (EV) automaker in Canada for the first half of 2025, signaling an important shift in consumer sentiment that shops should take note of.
Driven by a rapidly expanding portfolio across its Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC brands, through June, GM has led the Canadian EV segment for three consecutive quarters, reflecting a strategic push that is reshaping the competitive landscape.
In Q2 2025, GM’s share of the Canadian electric vehicle market surged to 23.2%, up significantly from 8.1% a year earlier.
This leap moved the automaker from sixth place to first in EV sales across the country.
While GM’s total EV volume now makes up 8.7% of its Canadian vehicle sales, its upward momentum comes at a time when electric vehicles overall represent 11.5% of new vehicle sales in Canada, according to industry analysts — a figure that continues to trend upward year-over-year.
This signals a gradual but meaningful shift in the mix of vehicles that will be showing up for service in years to come. GM’s success in attracting first-time buyers — with over 60% of its electric vehicle customers new to the brand — also suggests growing mainstream acceptance of electric platforms beyond early adopters.
“With 13 EVs across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac, we’re offering Canadians more choice than ever, and that’s bringing new customers into the GM family,” said Shane Peever, vice president of sales, service and marketing at GM Canada. “For the past two years, GM has led the Canadian auto industry in total sales, and now that leadership includes EVs.”
GM offers 13 electric vehicle models across Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC — more than any other automaker in Canada. The portfolio includes full-size trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC HUMMER EV; luxury SUVs from Cadillac including the Escalade IQ, OPTIQ, and LYRIQ; SUVs from Chevrolet like the Equinox EV and Blazer EV; and commercial EVs from BrightDrop, for fleet customers transitioning to zero-emission transportation.
For aftermarket professionals, the numbers point to growing EV penetration and the need to prepare for evolving service, diagnostic, and repair needs.
