Succession planning is a global challenge for independent automotive businesses, and preparing the next generation of leaders takes more than handing over the keys.
Indie Garage has frequently covered the importance of succession planning, featured numerous thriving multigenerational businesses, and explored how mentorship can shape the future of independent shops across Canada. We keep hearing about the greatest generational wealth and business transfer in history that’s happening as we speak and that will only intensify over the next few decades.
A week-long program, named Point S, recently brought young automotive professionals from nine countries to Provence, France, for its second Next Generation Campus. The Point S program is specifically designed to strengthen leadership skills and turn business ambitions into practical growth plans.
Through coaching, workshops and collaborative challenges, participants explored new growth opportunities, customer retention and ways to build stronger businesses. Each participant went home with a structured growth plan to put into practice.
Fabien Bouquet, CEO of Point S International, said: “The feedback from this year’s Campus shows exactly why investing in the next generation is so important. We shouldn’t define growth simply as increasing sales or expanding a business. It’s about developing people who can lead teams, understand their customers, make informed commercial decisions and turn ambition into action.”
Point S, this training bootcamp, may have been an ocean away- and we like to keep things close to home at Indie- but this just emphasizes how the importance of preparing future leaders in the aftermarket is universal today.
As the automotive sector evolves, independent businesses will need leaders who can adapt, make sound decisions and build lasting customer relationships. All independent shops can create cover-story worthy longevity- investment in mentorship and creation of a structured exchange can make this possible.
For independent shops in Canada and around the world, the message is much the same: a successful succession starts long before the keys change hands.
The latest issue of Indie Garage is out now, with shop owners sharing life-changing training, discussion on generational wealth, more shops doing succession right and tips on helping your apprentices succeed.
