Ontario’s scrap tire crisis continues to fester

Fueled by scrap tire collection quotas that have fallen below Ontario’s actual recovery needs for months, a growing backlog of used tires is exposing deep cracks in the province’s tire recycling economy.

The scrap tire crisis carries real environmental and community risk. As collection and recycling falls far behind, the danger for issues from fraud to fire have piled up as well. These processing shortfalls have also greatly impacted our hauling, collection and recycling businesses- raising concerns about the long-term sustainability and credibility of the province’s recycling framework.

Adam Moffatt, executive director of the Ontario Tire Dealers Association, joins host Andrew Ross in this episode of The Great Canadian Aftermarket Podcast. Moffatt breaks down how Ontario’s scrap tire backlog reached this point (including recent changes to tire collection rules), why collection targets have become such a flashpoint, and what he believes needs to change to restore stability and accountability to the province’s tire recycling system.

Tires are piling up at shops and collection sites, haulers are being sidelined, and regulators continue adjusting a system many in the industry say is no longer keeping pace with real-world demand. With concerns mounting over storage capacity, environmental risk, and a disrupted pipeline for businesses and consumers alike, the pressure is building for meaningful reform.
